About John Lockley, NZ's Top Hunting Dog Breeder…
My passion is the dogs and the breeds, and the sport I do. That's pig hunting mainly.
To breed a beautiful confirmation hunting dog that can suit a lot of people, and catch pigs is what I love to do.
The real secret is to have a dog that can catch a pig, and keep them in one place until you can sort it.
A physical healthy sport. This is why I am into pig hunting.
My background is I have been farming all my life, left school at 14 years of age and went mustering.
Dogs and horses have been my life! My passion.

How I started…
My father and two uncles were hunters and as a child around 5 or 6 years old I saw them bring home pigs and that.
As a child the pigs looked huge, with big jaws, and that was exciting. As was duck shooting.
I was brought up on all this type of hunting and gathering for a purpose.
So when I left school, this was a big part of my life. Hunting and gathering a feed.
This was our main food source. To put food in the freezer for the family.
I enjoyed this so much I just carried it on...

I have been breeding the Lockley dogs since 1974…
I had a couple of dogs great dogs, mated them and their prodigy turned out pretty special so I have kept the line exactly the same as it was around 35 years ago.

Stu is my North Island Expert, we are now a partnership and have a wealth of knowledge between us.

Stu has been farming all of his life except for about 8 years shearing in NZ and Australia.
He has had packs of dogs in both countries.
Sheep and pig dogs in NZ and pig dogs when he was shearing in Australia.
Pig hunting is a passion bordering on obsession for Stu. He loves developing young dogs and seeing them progress to good finding and stopping dogs.
That is where the Lockley dogs come in to it for him.
He hunts most weekends with both of his sons Mike and Aaron, who are also passionate about hunting Lockley dogs.
The team of Lockleys’ Stu is hunting at present have an excellent hunt drive, medium range finding abilities and good stopping ability.
