About John Lockley…
My passion is the dogs and the breeds, and the sport I do. That's pig hunting mainly.
To breed a beautiful confirmation hunting dog that can suit a lot of people, and catch pigs is what I love to do.
The real secret is to have a dog that can catch a pig, and keep them in one place until you can sort it.
A physical healthy sport. This is why I am into pig hunting.
My background is I have been farming all my life, left school at 14 years of age and went mustering.
Dogs and horses have been my life! My passion.

How John Started
Hunting runs deep in the Lockley family. My father and two uncles were hunters, and by the age of five or six, I was already tagging along, watching them bring home pigs. Back then, the pigs looked enormous with massive jaws — thrilling for a young kid. Duck shooting and other traditional hunts were just as exciting, and I grew up learning the importance of hunting and gathering for a purpose.
When I left school, hunting became more than a pastime — it was a way of life. Providing food for the family, putting meat in the freezer, and honing skills in the field shaped my lifelong connection with working hunting dogs.

It all started with a couple of exceptional dogs. I mated them, and their progeny were so special that I have maintained the line exactly as it was over 35 years ago. Today, Lockley dogs are recognised in New Zealand for their intelligence, stamina, and natural hunting ability, a result of decades of careful breeding and hands-on experience.
